PROJECT: LXD Naturalis

The first half year of the fourth and final school year I took part of the minor Learning Experience Design (LXD). On behalf of the Museum of Natural History in Leiden (NCB Naturalis) we have designed the workshop which is part of the Live Science Project, starting May 2011. It is supposed to attract a new target group of people from 20 to 30 years old.

From May the museum will put two collections, one from Amsterdam and one from Leiden, together into one in this workshop. All data will be stored in a brand-new database. To open this database to the public, we made it visually attractive and easy to use. There are four multi-touch screens where you can browse through the database using your fingers. When you go further down a family tree (snails, shells or fossils) you will notice the change of pinpoints on the worldmap. They point out the places where the many different objects were found.

To strengthen respect from the visitor for the scientists there is a prominent counter in the workplace. The counter will show what kind of a major project Live Science is and it will always show the current count of the database. It will count up to at least a million objects.
